Fate / Zero is a novel [see, is like if you read a book] in which he tells the Fourth War for the Holy Grail [which is earlier than what we see and we are constantly mentioned in the anime Fate / Stay Night]
In this novel featuring characters we already know: Saber, Gilgamesh, Kotomine, Kiritsugu, Zouk, Illyasviel, Rin and Sakura [the latter are minor characters]. The rest are new characters.
