Shortly after he entered the U.S. Navy, becoming a pilot. There was a brief romance with naval nurse Lisa Sherman ended when she died in a car accident. At the same time Al was accused of raping and murdering the wife of his commanding officer, plus the exonerated. After he met Beth, his first wife.

Returning home at 73 and find it empty was a blow to Al, because Beth always considered as the love of his life. When Sam disappears, becomes his holographic guide in Time (isthe 'Observer' or 'Supervisor').
